Alderbrook Resort and Spa : Parent Getaway and Family Friendly

Alderbrook Resort

If you’ve heard about Alderbrook Resort and Spa, several words might come to mind: Luxury, relaxation, nature, beach, and golf.  But be sure to add these words – Family friendly, and handicap accessible.

My husband and I had a chance to visit Alderbrook Resort and Spa sans kids – and we took it!  What we found was quiet relaxation in a uniquely Pacific Northwest setting, with lots of options for families with a special needs child.

Situated amongst the pristine beauty of Hood Canal, Alderbrook Resort and Spa is a luxurious destination that embraces its location and history. Since 1913 families have been vacationing at Alderbrook, enjoying resort amenities alongside opportunities to explore the unspoiled nature of this part of the Puget Sound. Alderbrook is family-friendly, yet private and secluded for those rare parent-only retreats.  Here’s an overview of what you’ll find on a visit.

Alderbrook Resort and Spa Accommodations:

There are a variety of room configurations and cabins available. When you call to book reservation, think about what you need for a nice stay and they can help guide you on the best room for your needs. There are several guest cabins, separate from the main hotel but with the same amenities, offering more room and privacy. For ADA accommodations, there are suites and rooms in the main lodge with roll-in showers and water views, some with ADA balconies.

Things to do at Alderbrook Resort and Spa:

The evening that we arrived for our stay, we entered the lobby to see some kids and parents enjoying a drawing class that was just wrapping up, individuals reading next to the massive fireplace, and other guests walking back to their rooms in their hotel robes, looking relaxed from a time at the pool or spa. There was plenty of activity, and yet it was quiet and peaceful. A unique mix of luxury, comfortable relaxation, and family-friendly.

Enjoy Hood Canal: Canoe, swim, nature walk, volleyball and yard games – think summer camp with great food and comfortable beds. A handicap accessible Lady Alderbrook yacht cruise takes you out for a water excursion that’s sure to be memorable.  Fishing and gathering shellfish available seasonally.

Hit the pool and jacuzzi: If your kids are like mine, the pool is the highlight of any trip. The pool area at Alderbrook is enclosed in glass, with huge doors that open when the weather is warm. Situated right along Hood Canal, the views are breathtaking. Featuring a handicap lift into the pool, and zero threshold entrances, the pool is ADA compliant for guests needing wheelchair accommodations. The patio furniture in the pool areas includes tables and chairs for snacks or games poolside.

Indoor activities: There is a library and game room, with crafts and activities planned seasonally. Once the gamer in your family sees the game room, they may never come back. Individual gaming systems connected to large-screen flat TVs and leather lounge chairs, Alderbrook Resort takes gaming to a whole new level. The on-site restaurant and bar have a nice selection featuring Northwest cuisine that embraces the history and location. Great pride is taking in incorporating locally-sourced, regional favorites, making for a delicious and uniquely Northwest experience. They can accommodate most food allergies, just ask. Don’t forget the beautiful spa for one-of-a-kind relaxing treatments.

Our overnight stay at Alderbrook resort and Spa was waaaay too short, but a world away from everyday life that was enough to begin to recharge our batteries. I would recommend at least 2-nights…maybe next time…

UPDATE September 12, 2017

alderbrook resort and spa

I took my older daughter to Alderbrook Resort and Spa for a girls spa day; it was just what we needed to reconnect and recharge.  Book any spa treatment and you have access to the entire spa area for the day – take full advantage of that!  Book your massage or facial, but get there early for water yoga and brunch, then stay after for a sauna, swim in the pool, hike on a nature trail or just soak in the fresh air and fabulous view.  Before you head home, drive a few miles up the road to the Union Country Store for some ice cream.  The perfect end to the perfect day.
